Beyond the Page

My husband does not like to read—books that is. He voraciously consumes information from the internet. I learned not so long ago that reading to him are just words on a page. He can’t envision the content; no movie plays in his mind.

In a recent faculty meeting, teachers were speaking about how much students should be reading—books that is. So, what role does reading in our world today play?

As the digital landscape continues to evolve at an astonishing pace, it's crucial that we empower the next generation with the necessary skills to thrive in this fast-paced world. Among these essential skills, the habit of reading stands out as a timeless and invaluable asset for students.

When it comes to how much high school students should read, there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. However, fostering a consistent reading habit is key. Encouraging students to read for at least 30 minutes to an hour every day can make a significant difference. This dedicated time allows them to immerse themselves in the written word, expand their vocabulary, enhance comprehension skills, and develop critical thinking abilities.

In today's digital age, promoting digital literacy is just as important as traditional literacy. Reading plays a pivotal role in fostering digital literacy skills, equipping students with the ability to navigate the vast online realm with confidence and discernment. When students engage with written content, whether it's e-books, articles, or blogs, they not only absorb information but also develop critical digital skills such as effective online research, evaluating the credibility of sources, and honing their ability to distinguish between reliable and misleading information—skills many adults need to brush up on and critical ones with the advancement of AI!

While it's sad that not everyone finds joy in reading books, we must acknowledge that each person has their own preferred method of consuming information. Our understanding of reading has evolved in the digital age, and it's crucial we adapt our approach to meet the needs and preferences of students. While books hold a timeless appeal, we must also recognize the value of digital reading experiences in cultivating critical digital skills. Ultimately, the goal is to foster a love for reading in all its forms, empowering students to become lifelong learners in an ever-changing world.
