Startups move fast. Education moves slow. I work in an edtech startup, which includes a virtual school, and it makes for a unique combination.
A recent article highlighted curriculum changes taking place for mathematics in a number of states—CA, GA, VA. And changes are indeed needed. Scores testify to it. The current work environment necessitates it. Math is being used and applied in different ways than in days past. Have the fundamentals of math changed—no. But the application, problem-solving, and critical thinking associated with math have all advanced.
Back to the state curriculum changes. In CA, the curriculum revision has taken four years. The math curriculum is already a decade old. In GA, their math standards were approved in 2021 but will not be implemented until this academic year. VA—Their current curriculum is from 2016. Their timeline indicates an implementation of new standards for the school year 2024-2025.
I'm all for being diligent and careful—especially when it comes to education and students. However, this snail's pace of work is crippling our students and their futures. Better processes need to be implemented to improve this rate of change. If not, other countries will continue to lap us in not just academic achievements but in becoming the predominant countries of leadership in all categories.
We, as a nation, must learn how to come to consensus in a much more agile way. Yes, that may mean compromise. Yes, that may mean leaning on the expertise of others and trusting them. Yes, that may mean you as an individual don't get everything you want, but rather what is good for the order and for students is paramount.
Imagine a future where our education system is adaptive, responding swiftly to the evolving needs of our students and the job market. A future where we foster innovation and creativity through agile curriculum development. As an edtech startup, we're committed to driving this change. Our team of passionate educators and tech enthusiasts work tirelessly to revolutionize education, bridging the gap between the rapid progress of startups and the traditionally slow-paced education sector.
Together, we're breaking free of the barriers and forging ahead to empower students with the tools they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. We all need to be part of the transformation of education. Let's create a brighter future for our students—one where they can conquer challenges, embrace change, and lead with confidence. Together, we can make education a driving force that propels our nation to new heights of excellence.
