Naked and Learning

Ever wondered about calculating a compound miter cut? If construction or math isn't your daily cup of tea, chances are you're not immediately equipped to tackle this. So, what's your strategy? Would you take a shot in the dark or give it a go, perhaps resorting to a trusty Google search?

A recent piece by The Hechinger Report rekindled the ongoing discussion on the Google effect. Recent studies shed light on how the conveniences of Google might actually be chipping away at our cognitive capacities. Our reliance on the internet's instant answers has made us complacent, foregoing the absorption and processing of information that we used to internalize for future recall.

Now consider the role of generative AI in this narrative. How does the advent of large language models affect this phenomenon? Does our mental acumen stand to deteriorate even further with these AI powerhouses handling information processing and generating responses on our behalf? And, importantly, what implications does this have for our learning approaches and pedagogical methods?

I remember countless nights as a child working beside my father and brother, elbow-deep in engine parts, as we meticulously reconstructed and fine-tuned car engines. It was an immersive learning experience, one where hands-on exploration reigned supreme. While I wasn't exactly a car enthusiast, for my brother, this was his golden avenue of learning—far more impactful than traditional schooling (and in hindsight, this perfectly aligns!). The knowledge he gained from working on engines became the bedrock for understanding various motors, a skill he routinely puts to use.

The million-dollar question is: What does this mean for today's learning landscape? If external crutches become our answer providers, how vulnerable does that make us? What happens to the spark of innovation and new breakthroughs?

There's a trend in the world of running—stripping away electronics for a purer experience. Perhaps, there's a lesson here for learning too. A "learning naked" movement, if you will. An environment where grappling with challenges demands we put aside the crutch of the internet. A space where mentors play the role of guides, leading us through the fundamentals while pushing us to contemplate intricacies, interdependencies, and potential scenarios. When was the last time you took on learning "naked"?
